NMR Facility User Guide for Phase 1

Pooled Samples and Instrument Reservation
  • The following rules are in effect 7 days a week.
  • Each lab will pool daily NMR samples.
  • One lab member will collect data for all samples during one large block of reserved time.
  • Reserve time with OpenInstrument. Only reserve what you need.
  • Pooled samples can be run on REM400 24/7.
  • Pooled samples can be run 11am-7pm on the UTL400, NCB400 and REM300.
  • The UTL400, NCB400 and REM300 are reserved for longer, overnight experiments after 7pm. Pooled samples can be run on these instruments if they have not been reserved for longer runs between 7 p.m. and 11 a.m.
  • Plan to clean the NMR workstation for 15 minutes after you are finished.
  • Do not reserve time right after another group. Allow for a 15-minute cleaning window.
  • Longer or special experiments can be run by individual users overnight. The 15-minute cleaning window still applies.
  • The smaller instruments (FTIR, polarimeter, lyophilizer) and UTL300 are available by appointment.
  • The EPR is available for normal use with only one user at a time.
Staff and Lab
  • Maintain a physical distance between NMR staff and users at all times.
  • Maximum lab occupancy will be posted on the doors.
  • The NMR labs are open 24/7.
  • Keep the doors open to allow touchless entry and exit.
  • Expect a minimum of chairs (no waiting near instruments or observing).
  • Email or text me at any time. I can help remotely on the magnets (jcataza1@jhu.edu, 330-224-3816).
Instrument Users
  • Wear a facemask and fresh gloves.
  • Follow the designated pathways in Remsen B25.
  • Bring your own paper, pen/pencil, and disinfectant (just in case).
  • Leave the lab during longer acquisitions if someone else is also in the lab (Remsen B25).
  • Replace plastic wrap over the keyboard.
  • Disinfect the desktop and anything else you touched (spray disinfectant onto a paper towel or microfiber rag and wipe down the computer peripherals).
  • Throw away gloves, used paper towels, and plastic wrap on your way out of the lab.
  • Wash your hands.
Possible/Confirmed COVID-19
  • You may voluntarily notify me of a possible or confirmed COVID-19 infection. I will keep your information confidential.
  • The facility will be closed for cleaning, and all users notified of the closure.
